Metal Casting

Metal Casting

Casting is a process by which liquid materials are poured into molds, which contain hollow cavities of the desired shapes until it solidify. The ejection or breaking out of the casting then takes place to get the process completed.

Casting can be used in forming hot liquid metals or some materials that are cooled after mixing other components like concrete, plaster, clays or epoxies. It is most often used for creating complex design shapes, as other methods are not feasible.

The development of more than 90 percent of all manufactured goods and 'capital' equipments use metal casting or rely on castings for their production. The metal casting industry produces simple and complex components whether they are created as prototypes or used many times in a manufactured product. Aside from metal casting services, foundries also offer machining, assembling and coating of the castings. The major recipient of casting applications include automobiles, trucks, farm and construction equipments, and many others.

The sales of metal casting industry in the United States has reached between $25 to $28 billion annually for the past several years. There are almost 3,000 foundries operating in the country, with 250,000 people working in the metal casting industry.
